Liverpool University Courses

NASS has always welcomed initiatives to upskill staff. Education often paves the way for new opportunities and gives people choices to move on into other roles with in the racing industry, or into other industry sectors altogether. By educating and empowering our members we hope to be able to influence racing in a wide variety of sectors and hopefully on day the BHA and other racing regulators will have a NASS member at the helm! We believe having people in power who truly understand what the roles within a racing yard involve will serve our industry well in the future.

Liverpool University are currently recruit for the next intake for the Horseracing MBA, which has 2 intake periods per year. Although the standard minimum entry requirements are an undergraduate degree and substantive management experience within the work place, there is room to negotiate so a degree is not an absolute necessity. If you have management experience within a yard (Head lad, assistant trainer, racing secretary, barn leader etc.) and want to pursue further study then please get in contact with us. Many people in racing undervalue their experience and don’t always realise the skill involved in the jobs they do. We will help you negotiate the application process which may seem daunting and can take through funding options with you. Many of the modules involve work based training and are completely relevant to racing. https://www.liverpool.ac.uk/management/mba/programme-features/work-based-projects/

The degree costs approximately £15 000 for the full course but The Levy Board and BHA are willing to look at funding/part funding a number of places. The course requires a full 24 days at the university campus and the rest of the work involved in self-study at home. Although regular assignments need to be submitted there is scope to study this course alongside full or part time work.

If you want to get a feel for what topics are discussed and how things work, check out the current student blogs and the university website for more information https://www.liverpool.ac.uk/study/postgraduate/taught/thoroughbred-horseracing-industries-mba/overview/
